About 89 Mio.
If you live in Karlsruhe, Germany, and precisely know Stuttgarter Straße, you may have heard about the planned reovation of part of this street. A street renovation is nothing but those banal things known from the news. Artist's book 89 Mio. from Hangyan Chen is more than that. It documents the quiet, invisible stories of 2019-2022, spring, summer, autumn, and winter. It explores the relationship between Hangyan as an urbanite and nature, urban and green space, ruins and beauty, etc. The doors left by the allotment (Ger. Kleingarten) as a clue throughout the book; the door, as a metaphor, shows an endless imagination of the world behind it. Her visual exploration is to keep the passage of time visible, present ing another species of beauty — the beauty of decay and surreal poetry. It is a rethinking of the street that will be renovated, a reinterpretation of this messy land.
